What Are Medjool Dates?

There are more than 100 different varieties of dates in the world, which are grown in warm climates like Morocco, the USA, Saudi Arabia, and the Middle East. It comes from the date palm tree (Phoenix dactylifera).
Medjool dates (Arabic: تمر المجهول – tamar al-majhūl, Tamar means ‘date’ and majhūl means ‘unknown’) are a special variety of dates originally from the region of Morocco.
Unlike many dates you see in stores, they are seen as a fresh fruit, not dried, so they stay soft and a little sticky. As they get older, their natural sugar increases and they taste even sweeter. They are harvested from the date palm, cleaned, and packaged without being processed or dehydrated.

What You Need to Know

Although Medjool dates are healthy, here are a few things to note:
They are high in natural sugars, so eat in moderation.
People with diabetes should check with their doctor.
Dates may contain sulfites, which can cause issues for some with allergies.
People with kidney issues should monitor potassium intake.

Medjool dates have fiber and nutrients that can support weight control. But since they are high in natural sugar and calories, it’s important to eat them in small amounts to avoid gaining extra weight.

They are a great source of potassium, a mineral many people don’t get enough of. But since potassium is filtered by the kidneys, people with kidney problems should ask their doctor how much they can safely eat.

Some dried fruits have sulfites, which are used to keep them fresh and free from bacteria. But if you get stomach pain, gas, loose motion, or skin rashes after eating them, you might be sensitive or allergic to sulfites. In that case, it’s best to avoid Medjool dates.

People with asthma should be careful, as sulfites in dried fruits can make breathing problems like wheezing worse.

Medjool dates grown in Bard Valley are not treated with pesticides because the desert weather keeps insects and pests away naturally. Some farms are certified organic, while others follow organic methods even if they’re not officially certified yet. So, most of these dates are grown in a clean and healthy way.

Sometimes you may see a white layer on the outside of a date. Don’t worry, it’s just natural sugar coming out. It’s safe to eat!
If you don’t like how it looks or want the date to be softer, just wrap it in a wet paper towel and microwave it for 5 seconds. It will become soft again, and the sugar will go back inside.
